Drama Year. With a motor built by Jamie Barkley, I was able to pull a gap from everyone, even the 1000cc bikes. I won the first 600 race by a margin of about 10 seconds. After my success at the first Shannonville round I started competing as well in the Quebec amateur series at St-Eustache and doing quite well, finishing on the podium every race. In the second round I fell while in the lead in the qualifier and broke my left ankle. I raced on Sunday and crossed the finish line in tears from the pain to take third place. The next round at Shannonvile while in the lead I high sided off the end of the back straight, and landed on my good foot, spraining it very badly. Unable to walk, I had to have Jim and my friends lift me on and off my bike before and after my races. The pain was enough for me to bear at Shannonville and St-Eustache where I continued racing and finishing on the podium. I finished the season second overall in 600 and third overall in formula. I also set a track record at Fabi.
New 600, new team. I raced a 2000 Yamaha R6 with Sceptre Racing Team under Syd Turner until it folded after the second month. I completed the season as a privateer with the help of mentor Jim Proulx, 4th in points overall as an amateur. My best finish was at the last round when I held off the to-be champ Clint Hines and then waved him by on the back straight so he could catch the lead pack and win his championship.
